Malan is constantly looking for fresh, captivating, venues and many of Umzingeli’s shows have been held in unique locations especially suited to the clients’ image. These have included train stations, art galleries, city halls and theatre spaces.
One prominent example was the FAIRLADY South African Fashion Awards (The Catherine’s) with its art (Johannesburg Art Gallery), theatre (Windybrow theatre in Hillbrow) and South African film (Johannesburg City Hall) themes. The “Fashion as Theatre” concept was awarded a Gold Loerie in November 2003. Other examples include a spectacular extravaganza at the finale for Mozambique Fashion Week where the Maputo train station was set alight with a stunning pyrotechnic display as models literally hung out of moving train carriages. While, in 2007, in celebration of the inner city of Johannesburg, the South African Fashion Awards were held at Park Station as a symbol of the journey many South Africans have made to realize their dreams.
In January 2005, Malan was the Entertainment Director for the Elton John Cape Town Ball at the Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West. Malan is also co- curator and responsible for the fashion node at the International Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town.
Umzingeli Productions continues to produce selected shows at Joburg Fashion Week, Cape Town Fashion Week, Durban Fashion Week and is responsible for the entire production of Mozambique Fashion Week. It has also run shows for four years at the prestigious Nederburg Wine Auction.
